Chelonia mydas
Green turtle
Family Cheloniidae. It is distributed in tropical and subtropical waters.
In Kushimoto waters, it is seen all the year round. It breeds south of
Yaku Island, and specially, the Ogasawara Islands are famous breeding grounds.
It is the cerapace length of 1m, and is often over the weight of 200kg.
Young green turtles eat anything, but adult green turtles eat seaweeds.
Around Kushimoto, the green turtle has green turtle is sometimes called
"Asahigame" that means the turtle with sunrise pattern.
In our aquarium, we succeeded in the first breeding of the green turtle
in 2001. |
